Horiba-nitrattester

Sold commercially

The Horiba nitrate tester has been used for several years in Denmark to measure the nitrate concentration in potato tops for potatoes grown for starch production. The results are used to estimate how much nitrogen should be applied during the final supplementary fertilization.
After calibration, the nitrate tester is used by cutting off the potato tops and pressing juice from the leaves and stem onto the sensor on the tester, whereafter the nitrate concentration is displayed on the device.
The tester can be a valuable tool for avoiding over-fertilization of starch potatoes, thereby helping to maintain the starch content in the tubers, while also potentially reducing fertilizer use and minimizing the risk of nitrogen leaching.
